Arrival in Oslo

You will likely arrive at one of the following three places:

1. Oslo airport Gardermoen
   This is the main airport for Oslo and it is situated about 35 kms north of the city. You have the following choices of transfer:
    
   • The airport express train departs every 20 minutes (some periods every 10 minutes) and takes 21 minutes. Fares: 160 NOK.
      
     Take the train to Nationaltheatret (the National Theater) if you live at Grand hotel, Rainbow hotel Munch, Rainbow Norrøna hotel or Rainbow hotel Gyldenløve. To reach the Rainbow hotel Gyldenløve, you will need to transfer to local transport (see below).
      
   • The SAS airport bus departs every 20 minutes and takes approximately 40 minutes to Oslo central. Fares at 110 NOK (170 NOK for return tickets). Student fares at 55 NOK.
      
     Take the bus to:
     • Professor Aschehougs Plass if you stay at Grand hotel, Rainbow hotel Munch or Rainbow Norrøna hotel.
     • Jernbanetorget if you live in Rainbow hotel Gyldenløve. You will need to transfer to local transport (see below).
        
       
   • Taxi is an option if several people are travelling together. Ordinary taxi fares will cost 600-900 NOK, but if you ask for an "Airport taxi" at the Taxi information desk in the arrival hall, you will get a fixed price of 420-470 NOK (depending on your destination in Oslo) until 7pm; after that, the charge is 720 NOK.
      
     
2. The central railway station
   This is the central transport hub in Oslo and ideal for transfer.
   Gyldenløve hotel will take about half an hour to reach by foot, so it is best to go by tram line 19 towards Majorstuen; get off at Vibes gate.
   You can, of course, also take a taxi to any hotel.
    
   
3. Torp airport
   This airport is located about 120 kms south of Oslo. The only transfer choice is to take the airport bus to Oslo; after about 2 hours you will arrive beside the main railway station (see above).

Travel within Oslo

Public transport within Oslo is highly coordinated. You pay by the hour for use of any kind of transport (except taxi): train, metro, tram, bus or boat, and you have unlimited transfer within that time.

The rates are:

Tickets are bought at the train and metro stations and in most Narvesen newsagent shops and 7-Elevens. You may also buy 1 hour tickets from the bus or tram driver, but if you buy just one (rather than eight) they are more expensive.

Note! All tickets must be stamped before they are valid! This is done in the small yellow or orange machines found on the buses and trams and on the metro platforms.

Metro lines

The metro/subway/tube lines run every 15 minutes, and every half hour after about 10pm. Metro stations are marked with a circled T.

Trams

The tram/streetcar lines run every 15 minutes and every 20 minutes after 6pm.

Taxis

Using a taxi in Oslo is fast and safe, but somewhat expensive. A trip from downtown Oslo to Blindern campus or back will cost about 130-160 NOK.

There are several taxi companies but they all have a lighted sign with "TAXI" on the roof. Just hail one with a lighted sign or look for a taxi rank with a blue sign saying "Taxi".

All taxis have meters displaying correct fare. Tipping 5-20 NOK is common, but not mandatory.

All taxis accept the major credit cards, but the driver will appreciate knowing about this when the journey starts.

ICPP 2005 conference site

The conference takes place on the University of Oslo's Blindern campus which is situated about 5 kms from downtown Oslo, as shown in this map.

All events will take place in the University Library (also known as Georg Sverdrup's house) which is building 27 on this map:

Access

We recommend that you use either the metro lines (shown in dark blue on the map above) or the tram lines (light blue on the map) to reach the campus.

Metro
Take either line 3 towards Sognsvann or line 5 towards Storo. After about 10 minutes, leave at Blindern station and follow the signs.

Tram
Take either line 10 or line 17 - both lines go to Rikshospitalet. After about 20 minutes you can leave at Universitetet Blindern (next to building 8 on the map) and follow the signs to the conference.

You may also take line 18 to John Colletts plass (next to building 42 on the map) which is the stop just prior to Universitetet Blindern and walk the last 300 meters.
